Right after morning announcements and the playing of “O Canada”, Mr. Devost rang the hallowed Mountain Day bell and walked down the halls like the town crier, letting the boys know that today would be a special day. Excited shouts were heard emerging from the classrooms and hurried preparations were made to get the boys assembled on the basketball courts, with their coats and backpacks, where final instructions were delivered before everyone loaded onto the buses.

The day was a bright, warm Fall day, perfect for a trip to Grassi Lakes near Canmore. The whole school took the more challenging route, which climbs gradually through forested terrain before reaching a very steep section with excellent views of waterfalls and the town of Canmore, before ending up at Grassi Lakes. The hike up was a challenge for some of our boys but they all showed resilience and made it all the way without complaint. Fantastic work!
The boys and their teachers enjoyed their lunches by the amazing turquoise lakes, climbing on the cliffs surrounding the lake, with some brave souls even trying out the water, despite the cool breeze at the top.
The way down was along the easier route, which is a wider road through dense forest. In all, the hike was a 3.2km loop with an elevation gain of 125m. The autumn colours didn’t disappoint and a fantastic day of fresh air, reconnecting with old friends, making new friends, enjoying nature and persevering made for a successful Mountain Day!
